Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell recently made headlines by saying that an elite quarterback is not necessary for success in the NFL. His opinion on that matter could change as soon as the end of the month given the steal Detroit is projected to get in CBS Sports' latest 2022 mock draft.

Lions Mock Draft

Ryan Wilson projects the Lions to grab quarterback Kenny Pickett with the No. 32 overall pick to cap off the first round. Lions fans would be overjoyed to see a player in debate of being the top signal-caller in this class still on the board at that time. Pickett has all the makings of a day one starter.

The Pittsburgh standout finished his college career by throwing for 4,319 yards and 42 touchdowns during his senior year (13 games). He showcased his pinpoint accuracy by completing 67.2% of his pass attempts as well. Pickett's ability to read defenses and pick them apart gives him major upside.

It's not like the Lions don't have a need at quarterback, either. Starter Jared Goff struggled to keep the Lions close on the scoreboard in his first year with the team. He also repeatedly failed to move the ball down the field, averaging only 231.8 passing yards per game and 9.8 yards per completion.

Pickett is the type of prospect that can alter the future of a franchise if developed correctly under the right coaching staff. Adding him onto an offense that features wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and running back D'Andre Swift would be a great step in the right direction for the Detroit franchise.

The 2022 NFL Draft is set to get underway on Thursday, April 28.
