Penei Sewell was one of this year's prized NFL Draft prospects, and the Detroit Lions were thrilled to scoop him up at No. 7 overall. However, his play during the preseason was the talk of the team, and not in a good way.
Lions GM Brad Holmes recently weighed in on Sewell's struggles.

Holmes chalked up Sewell's play to any learning curve a first-year player goes through. The Oregon product also sat out the 2020 campaign, so there'll be some rust for the offensive lineman to shake off.
"He’s going through the normal process that a rookie would go through, regardless of where he’s drafted. That’s a tough position to play out there on that island and he’s sat out for a year. "- Brad Holmes
Holmes added that he thinks Sewell is "ready now," so there appears to be no hesitations about starting him in Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers.
Obviously the new GM is going to stick to his guns on Sewell. Any disappointment he expresses could have a negative effect, and there's no point in overreacting to preseason play. How he looks in the regular season will be a huge story to monitor throughout the year.
Detroit is a 7.5-point home underdog heading into their season opener against the 49ers, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
