A number of NFL teams are looking at their cap space situations and finding ways to save money. The Detroit Lions are no different as they recently took quarterback Jared Goff's $25.65 million base salary and converted $20 million into a bonus in order to clear $15 million in cap space for 2021.
The team now has the ability to build around their new quarterback by searching through the remaining free agents on the market. With that in mind, here are three free agents the Lions should sign with the saved cap space.
Lions Free Agent Targets
1. Shawn Williams, Safety
Shawn Williams is an 8-year NFL veteran and that kind of experience should be welcomed on this Detroit defense. While he did have a down year in 2020 accumulating just 16 tackles, Williams had over 100 tackles in each of the prior two seasons. The former third-round pick also has a knack for picking off the ball as he has racked up 12 interceptions in his career. The Lions gave up the most passing touchdowns in the NFL last season (38) and need any help they can get in the secondary. This would be an underrated and smart signing.
2. Demarcus Robinson, Wide Receiver
The Lions signed one wide receiver so far this offseason in Breshad Perriman, but it'd be surprising if they stopped there. Detroit lost their top three starters at the position last season and signing Demarcus Robinson would give the team a new intriguing duo. Robinson has explosive speed and is always capable of beating opposing defenses deep down the field. He is also very consistent as he has just six drops on 147 targets in the last three seasons. Signing in Detroit would give Robinson a chance to develop into a No. 1 receiver so it may be a win-win situation for both sides.
3. De'Veondre Campbell, Linebacker
It is no secret the Lions defense is in desperate need of playmakers and linebacker De'Vondre Campbell fits that role perfectly. Campbell shined in 2020, posting 99 tackles and 2.0 sacks in his first season in Arizona. In fact, it was his fourth straight season with over 90 tackles. He also set a career high with 7 tackles for a loss and would be an upgrade over current the current Lions linebacker core. At just 27 years old, Campbell could be a centerpiece on this defense for years to come. Detroit should do whatever it takes to bring him onto the team.
