The Detroit Lions own the No. 2 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft and with holes at a number of positions as they continue their rebuild, this is a very valuable pick for the team's future. Which is why Lions fans will hate their projected selection in Todd McShay's latest mock draft on ESPN.

Detroit Lions Mock Draft

The team is now projected to select safety Kyle Hamilton out of Notre Dame. With glaring needs at both edge rusher and on the offensive line, taking a safety this high seems misguided at best, and a disaster at worst. Detroit was horrendous at bringing down the quarterback last season, ranking 31st in the NFL in sacks per game (1.8).

Detroit Lions First-Round Pick

Yes, Aiden Hutchinson is off the board at No. 1 in this projection, but that still leaves the likes of Kayvon Thibodeaux and David Ojabo among others on the board. Thibodeaux was previously projected as the No. 1 overall pick as recently as a couple of months ago. And that's just looking at the top edge rushers.

In terms of offensive line, McShay has the Lions passing on both Alabama's Evan Neal and NC State's Ikem Ekwonu, who both have received No. 1 overall pick buzz themselves in recent weeks.

While the Lions do have holes in the secondary and specifically at safety, using a pick this high on a position that has rarely been the foundational part of a defense should not be the move Lions fans want to see, even with all of Hamilton's talents.
