Michael Pineda's placement on the 15-day injured list, thanks to a fractured middle finger, was a bit of a gut punch to the Detroit Tigers. Detroit sits in last place in the AL Central at 13-23 and Pineda has been one of their most effective starting pitchers to start the year.
Fortunately for Detroit, Pineda underwent imaging on his fractured finger and this latest injury update is nothing short of a big relief.
Michael Pineda Injury Update
Manager A.J. Hinch told reporters on Tuesday that Pineda's fractured finger "is not expected to require surgery."
The nine-year veteran will be re-evaluated in a couple of weeks, but avoiding surgery means he's likely to return much sooner than originally anticipated.
Hinch even mentioned optimism around Pineda not missing multiple months.
While Pineda isn't necessarily a long-term solution for Detroit's future, his role was to help the Tigers win more ball games as they continue to rebuild.
Fans should keep a lookout for Pineda's next evaluation in the coming weeks. For now, the Tigers hold just +5000 odds to win the AL Central on FanDuel Sportsbook.
