Latest Casey Mize Injury Update Paints Bleak Picture for Future
Casey Mize's MLB career hasn't unfolded as many predicted when the Detroit Tigers selected him first overall at the 2018 MLB Draft. Fans had high expectations for him to put everything together in 2022, but a lingering elbow injury has prevented him from seeing much action.
Mize's recovery has suffered setback after setback, with the latest coming on Saturday when Tigers manager A.J. Hinch revealed that the 25-year-old still can't "throw full throttle" just yet. No matter how you slice it, the situation doesn't bode well for his future in the Majors.
Casey Mize Injury Update
Mize was supposed to get some starter reps in with Triple-A Toledo, but he's not comfortable enough with his elbow yet to handle that responsibility. One has to assume that if he suffers another significant setback, Tommy John surgery could be in the cards.
Mize looked like he was putting things together last year after finishing 2021 with a 7-9 record in 30 starts, along with a 3.71 ERA 1.137 WHIP. That success hasn't carried over to the 2022 campaign, where he's 0-1 in two starts with a 5.40 ERA while surrendering 11.7 hits per nine innings pitched.
Tigers fans have been coming to terms with the fact that Mize might just be a bust. Injuries aside, he simply doesn't look like a reliable starting pitcher that can be Detroit's ace one day.
Even if Tommy John surgery isn't a requirement, it's hard picturing him having much of a future with the franchise. For that to happen, he must put his injury history behind him and pitch like the pitcher that Tigers fans imagined him becoming four years ago.
