Most of the offseason discussion surrounding the San Francisco 49ers concerned the quarterback situation between Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. While Lance has already been named the team's starting QB, that hasn't stopped rumors about the 49ers not believing in the sophomore from popping up.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is done with rumors saying that Garoppolo is only around because the team doesn't believe in Lance. The bench boss took to KNBR radio on Friday, saying that the media "sounds like a fan talking and they have zero idea of what they're talking about."

San Francisco 49ers Rumors

Back in March, well-known NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the 49ers would keep Garoppolo if they didn't believe in Lance. It's likely that San Francisco couldn't find a trade partner due to financial reasons, however, Lance's inconsistent training camp performances didn't do anything to help his case.

Nonetheless, it's understandable why Shanahan is frustrated. The 49ers traded two first-round picks and a third-rounder to move up in the 2021 NFL Draft to select Lance. After paying that price, the last thing they want to do is look like they regret it a year-and-a-half later.

Even if the 49ers fully believe in him, Lance has a lot to prove this year. He hasn't played a full year of football since he started for North Dakota State in 2019. Garoppolo dominated the starting duties last year, resulting in Lance recording 603 passing yards and five touchdowns to two interceptions in six games (two starts).

Along with his rushing abilities, there's no doubt that Lance has the potential to be a star in the NFL. The only question is whether or not he's able to live up to that as early as the 2022 campaign and shut up his doubters sooner than later.

Until he does, though, expect that Lance-Garoppolo rumor mill to continue rolling.

Trey Lance NFL MVP Odds

Even if it turns out that the 49ers have their doubts regarding Lance, oddsmakers don't. FanDuel Sportsbook currently lists the sophomore QB at +2500 to be named the 2022 NFL MVP, tying him with Derek Carr and Jalen Hurts for the 12th-best odds.
