The 2022 T-Mobile Home Run Derby field continues to grow with two-time champion Pete Alonso and legendary slugger Albert Pujols joining in. Neither hitter has tallied as many bombs as the latest participant this season, though. Kyle Schwarber took to Instagram with an epic video announcement.
Kyle Schwarber Home Run Derby
Schwarber posted a mashup of some of his best home runs from the first half of the season, called by broadcaster Tom McCarthy. Thrown in was a picture of Los Angeles' iconic Hollywood sign and a throwback to when he last competed in the derby. It had to get Philadelphia Phillies fans excited.
Of course, the 29-year-old currently leads the National League with 28 long balls and is on pace to break his best single-season mark of 38 (2019). Schwarber's dominant power combined with his ability to get on base (61 runs scored) has also led him to a second-straight All-Star appearance.
It's worth noting this will be Schwarber's second appearance in the HR Derby. He nearly took home the title back in 2018 when he smacked 65 total home runs, including 18 in the final round. It was an exciting event in which he defeated current teammate Rhys Hoskins before losing to Bryce Harper.
The Home Run Derby is set to to start at 8 p.m. ET on Monday night as eight players battle it out for the crown. That bracket is set to be released at 4 p.m. ET on Thursday, July 14.
