Kerryon Johnson's future with the Detroit Lions is uncertain at the moment. It was reported Wednesday night that he was being waived by the team, but Lions GM Brad Holmes said Thursday morning the situation is a work in progress.

A release for Johnson may still be in the cards. Here's three likely free agent destinations for the former second-round pick if he is waived.

Kerryon Johnson Rumors

3. Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons made the surprising decision not to address running back in the NFL Draft. Atlanta's current RB1 is career backup Mike Davis, and the team's depth behind him is suspect at best with gadget player Cordarrelle Patterson, Qadree Ollison and UDFA signing Javian Hawkins. Taking a chance on Johnson if he hits the free agent market makes sense. He impressed with 854 yards from scrimmage as a rookie, and while his numbers have dipped since then, the potential is clearly there for the 23-year-old to break out in the right situation. He could be a surprise in the Falcons' backfield if given the chance.

2. Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears could take a flier on Johnson to bolster their RB depth. Tarik Cohen is coming off of an ACL, Patterson signed with Atlanta this offseason, and current RB3 Damien Williams last played in a game in 2019 after opting out this past season. David Montgomery is a 1,000-yard rushing stud, but it wouldn't hurt the Bears to add another option just in case.

1. Carolina Panthers

Running back depth was a huge need for the Carolina Panthers last season with Christian McCaffrey's injury struggles. And with Davis signing in Atlanta, there's no clear RB2 to shoulder the load in case CMC goes down again. There's no telling how fourth-round pick Chuba Hubbard would handle starter reps. Behind Hubbard are inexperienced options in Rodney Smith and Reggie Bonnafon. Johnson saw 100-plus rushing attempts over his first two seasons, so he's someone who could handle backup duties. The RB would be a low-cost addition that's fully capable of stepping up if need be and spelling McCaffrey to avoid unnecessary wear.
