The Carolina Panthers' practice on Tuesday took a scary turn when wide receiver Keith Kirkwood suffered a hit to the head from safety J.T. Ibe and was carried off of the field. That now infamous collision led to Ibe being cut from the team after practice.

Ibe opened up about what went wrong on that play in a recent interview.

Ibe was nothing but apologetic following his hit on Kirkwood. He didn't want to cause any kind of injury and was hoping to just make a play on the ball.

“I just saw the ball and him and I wanted to interrupt it. It wasn’t me aiming for his head. It was just me trying to jar the ball out.”

The safety even asked trainers to tell Kirkwood that he was sorry right after the hit, so it's clear he had no ill intent.

It is an unfortunate situation for all involved. Ibe was hoping to catch on with an NFL team after going undrafted in 2019, but his involvement in this hit clouds his future for now.

Kirkwood, meanwhile, will face the physical after effects of his collision, though initial reports were positive. He was looking to get back on track after being on the injured reserve for all but one game during the 2020 campaign.

Hopefully Kirkwood can move past the collision and get fully healthy ahead of the Panthers' Week 1 matchup against the New York Jets.
