One of the more intriguing NFL offseason storylines surrounds San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. With the 49ers looking to run with Trey Lance under center next season, the organization and Garoppolo have been looking for a trade for the 30-year-old veteran.
The Athletic's Mike Sando has since revealed the timeline of a potential Garoppolo trade — and it might not be soon. League sources close to Sando indicated that the 49ers could wait until closer to training camp to move the gunslinger.
Jimmy Garoppolo Trade Rumors
Sando added that the 49ers might wait until "July or August" to move Garoppolo because it could increase the asking price. With several quarterback-needy teams looking to stay competitive, such as the Indianapolis Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers, some organizations could become desperate enough to overpay.
Garoppolo has led the 49ers to an NFC Championship appearance in two of the last three seasons — including going all the way to Super Bowl LIV. He's played 37 games over that stretch, completing 68.5% of his passes for 8,884 yards and 54 touchdowns to 30 interceptions.
At the same time, it's entirely possible that Garoppolo sticks with San Francisco for another season. ESPN's Adam Schefter recently that the 49ers could stick with 'Jimmy G' because some in the organization don't think that Lance is ready to be the full-time starter just yet.
Nevertheless, Garoppolo is one of the top available quarterbacks. Any team that fields him should have a good chance at being competitive next season.
