The NFL changed the way jersey numbers are assigned this year, allowing more positions to wear single-digit numbers this season. We've already seen a ton of players opt to change their jerseys as a result of this new rule.

But Dallas Cowboys fans could be in for one of the most polarizing jersey changes yet. Former Pro Bowl linebacker Jaylon Smith will switch from No. 54 to No. 9 this season – a number that used to be worn by Cowboys legend Tony Romo.

Romo is one of the most beloved Cowboys quarterbacks ever, so some fans likely won't be too pleased with this news. Still, it's the number Smith wore back with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, when he was one of the best prospects in the country before suffering a devastating knee injury.

It's hard to blame Smith for wanting to make the change, and it'll be fun to watch the hard-hitting linebacker in that iconic No. 9 jersey.

Smith's Cowboys are currently favored to win the NFC East on FanDuel Sportsbook, with odds set at +110.
