The Denver Broncos made a statement during the 2021 NFL Draft by trading up to select North Carolina running back Javonte Williams in the second round. Investing so much in Williams seemed to suggest the Broncos were hoping he'd play a big role in the offense, and that seems to be the case so far this offseason.

Ryan O'Halloran of the Denver Post recently predicted that Williams will lead the team in rush attempts this season. Williams is behind starter Melvin Gordon on the depth chart right now, but it may not be long until he takes on a bigger role on this offense given his dual-threat abilities.

Williams shined at UNC racking up 2,836 yards from scrimmage to go along with 33 touchdowns over the course of three seasons (34 games played). He is a strong physical, downhill runner that has the patience to see holes open up and the acceleration needed to burst right through them.

It's not a secret that Gordon struggled to produce in 2020. Although he only 14 rushing yards away from a 1,000-yard season, the veteran ball-carrier finished with an overall grade of 72.5 from Pro Football Focus. That number ranked No. 32 amongst NFL running backs and he is now entering his age-28 season.

If Williams takes over the starting role within the first few weeks of the season, he would be in line to be one of the top rookies in fantasy football. Denver has always had a run-first scheme and posted the 12th highest rush rate (42.9 percent) in 2020 despite falling behind in a majority of its games.

Simply put, Williams has the potential to be a league-winning type of player and one that can rise to the RB2 level. He has a current average draft position in the middle of the fourth round according to FantasyPros, but do not be surprised if that number rises before fantasy football drafts start to get underway in August.
