The Jacksonville Jaguars' starting quarterback spot is locked up for the foreseeable future by Trevor Lawrence. Not only was he the first overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft, but he also led the team to a surprise playoff berth last season and is still getting better at age 23.

Even with such a talented young quarterback, it's still important to have depth backing him up. That's why the Jaguars extended QB C.J. Beathard before he could get to free agency.

Beathard has already been Lawrence's backup for two years, so it's clear Jacksonville wanted to keep a guy around that knows the system. He's also started 12 games in his career with an unspectacular 2-10 record, although all of those games were with the San Francisco 49ers.

Beathard has only thrown 13 passes total in two years with the Jaguars, and hopefully he doesn't need to throw many more, as that would mean Lawrence is healthy and performing well.

Regardless, the Jaguars got their guy and have him right behind Lawrence ready to step in if and when they need him. Now they can focus on improving other areas of the team for the rest of the offseason.
