Urban Meyer Explains Why He Didn't Draft More Ex-Buckeyes
College coaching legend Urban Meyer is now on his next adventure as an NFL head coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Meyer will likely approach the rebuild in Jacksonville as if he was back in college, establishing a clear identity and culture for his new team to follow.
While the Ohio State presence is already strong with the Jaguars, Meyer explained why he didn't select more former Buckeyes in the 2021 NFL Draft.
The former Ohio State head coach revealed he was targeting both Jonathon Cooper and Justin Hillard in the draft. However, they were a "want" and Meyer had to pull back since the value wasn't there.
"If I want him and it's not exactly what our team needs, then I have a chance of hurting our team — if that makes sense. So a completely different mindset. Coaches are all about the need and the want. Personnel people are all about the value. And so, you've got to cooperate the two."- Urban Meyer
The coach was still able to tap into his Buckeye roots for one pick during the draft, as the Jaguars nabbed Luke Farrell to fill a need at tight end for incoming QB Trevor Lawrence. Meyer also almost added another Ohio State player in Baron Browning but he was taken one pick earlier by the Denver Broncos.
Meyer has already learned one tough lesson at the next level, with NFL roster additions having to consider value versus want or need. Still, it'd be no shock to see Meyer target more former Buckeyes in the years to come.
