The Seattle Seahawks have made it clear that they have faith that Geno Smith or Drew Lock can handle starting quarterback duties in the 2022 NFL season. But that hasn't stopped rumors from swirling about the organization potentially bringing in some outside help.
Fox Sports Radio's Sheena Quick reported on Wednesday morning that the Seahawks had interest in former NFL MVP Cam Newton. However, an insider with ties to the organization says that might not be factual.
Cam Newton Seahawks Rumors
The Seattle Times' Bob Condotta has since dismissed the idea of Newton to the Seahawks, saying that "any report" regarding the subject "isn't accurate." He did add that the Seahawks were interested in the veteran QB's services when Russell Wilson was injured last year, but that's since changed.
If this was even the Newton of four years ago, he'd be an upgrade over Lock. Having said that, the 33-year-old free agent is a shell of his former self and wouldn't move the needle in 2022. In fact, here's a look at both Lock and Newton's stats from their last 17 starts.
- Drew Lock: 316 passes on 542 attempts (58.3%), 3,670 passing yards, 18 TDs to 15 INTs
- Cam Newton: 246 passes on 399 attempts (61.7%), 2,619 passing yards, 9 TDs to 13 INTs
Fortunately for Newton, it's looking like he still has a potential suitor. Both Quick and the Charlotte Observer's Jonathan M. Alexander reported that the Carolina Panthers are interested in bringing him back for another season "at a reduced capacity."
Seahawks Super Bowl Odds
It remains to be seen if Lock can help the Seahawks go on an unlikely championship run in 2022. The odds are stacked against them, as expected, with FanDuel Sportsbook only giving Seattle +13000 odds (T-No. 28) to win Super Bowl LVII next February.
