Insider Reveals Giants' Frustrating Trade Deadline Plans

The San Francisco Giants entered the MLB All-Star break as a NL Wild Card contender, but have now lost seven games in a row and are spiraling down the wrong path. Although an under-.500 record suggests they could be sellers at the deadline, insider Buster Olney reports that is not the case.
As of Wednesday night, the Giants continue to convey to other teams that they aren't sellers, and at the moment, they intend to hang on to possible free agents Carlos Rodon, Joc Pederson. Given Giants' recent slide, other teams are monitoring San Francisco closely.

San Francisco Giants Trade Deadline
Olney explained that San Francisco's current plan is to hold on to their best two trade chips in starting pitcher Carlos Rodon and power-hitting outfielder Joc Pederson. The front office obviously thinks a turnaround is on the way and the Giants just sit 3.5 games back of the St. Louis Cardinals, anyways.
The only problem is that Pederson is set to hit free agency after the 2022 season and Rodon has a player opt-out in his contract. That means both of them could end up on different squads in 2023 and the Giants would get nothing in return. Trading them now may be their best shot to build future talent.
Rodon owns an 8-6 record to go along with a 3.18 ERA and 1.12 WHIP across 20 starts this season. Meanwhile, Pederson is slashing .244/.319/.496 with 36 runs scored, 17 home runs and 43 RBI. Both players were named as NL All-Stars in July and could bring back multiple big prospects in a trade.
For now, all signs point to the Giants continuing their search for low-level upgrades at positions of need. That includes in the outfield and at the catcher position. San Francisco has odds set at +6000 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
