After a shocking 3-4 start, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a team in need of serious improvements ahead of the NFL trade deadline. Tampa Bay's usually-sound defense is a mess and quarterback Tom Brady is having trouble getting into a rhythm with bad offensive line play and inconsistent wide receivers.
NFL insider Jeremy Fowler identified one position the Bucs must upgrade via the trade market, and it's a somewhat surprising choice.
Fowler believes Tampa Bay will "look at the tight end trade market" before Tuesday's deadline. Not only does the team "desperately miss Rob Gronkowski" but Fowler believes the defense will turn things around because they've "been good for a while."
Brady has struggled to find a reliable third weapon behind Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Russell Gage ranks third on the team with 40 targets, but has only converted 29 for receptions and 8.0 yards per catch. That's a far cry from Gronkowski's 55 catches at 14.6 yards per reception in 2021.
Plus, tight ends are always another weapon to use in pass-blocking schemes.
Young Denver Broncos TE Albert Okwuegbunam is one name swirling around the rumor mill, in addition to Austin Hooper of the Tennessee Titans.
For now, Brady and his Buccaneers hold +1600 odds to win Super Bowl 57 on FanDuel Sportsbook.
