The MLB Trade Deadline is less than a week away, and the rumors are starting to heat up, especially for the two dominant starting pitchers available. That's none other than Cincinnati Reds' Luis Castillo and Oakland Athletics' Frankie Montas.
ESPN's Jeff Passan recently gave a primer on the trade market for this year's pitchers and named one team as the most aggressive in pursuit of these two aces.
Cardinals Trade Rumors
Passan called the Cardinals the "hottest" team after both Castillo and Montas.
Either would be a perfect fit in St. Louis, who trail the Milwaukee Brewers by 3.0 games in the NL Central standings but stand 0.5-games up in the race for the final Wild Card.
Jack Flaherty, Steven Matz and Dakota Hudson are all currently on the IL, which has left the Cardinals' rotation in a precarious position. Passan also discussed the franchise's interest in Juan Soto, but believes the need for a starting pitcher wins out.
Castillo is the better pitcher in 2022, judging by his elite 2.77 ERA and 82 strikeouts across 78.0 innings pitcher. Montas is no slouch, touting a career-best 3.18 ERA in 19 starts.
The Cardinals currently hold +160 odds to win the NL Central on FanDuel Sportsbook, comparing to the Brewers' leading -210 odds. Those numbers are likely to change with the addition of a name such as Castillo or Montas.
