The Chicago Bears' quarterback situation is a mess, and at this stage it looks like Nick Foles may be the frontrunner for the starting job in 2021.

On Tuesday, NFL insider Ian Rapoport offered another prediction for the Bears — that they would sign soon-to-be free agent quarterback Alex Smith. Yikes.

Smith obviously has an amazing story. Overcoming a career- and even life-threatening injury to start six games in the 2020 NFL season was amazing to watch. And he led the Washington Football Team to a 5-1 record in that time.

But it's not like they were winning because of Smith's strong play. He averaged 5.3 adjusted yards per pass attempt (AY/A). That was his worst mark since 2007, and it ranked just 33rd among 36 qualifying passers in 2020.

Smith's veteran presence could bring a lot to any NFL locker room, but he should not be plan-A for a team that has playoff aspirations in 2021.

If the Bears really try to answer their quarterback conundrum with a Foles/Smith duo, fans in Chicago are going to be in for a rough year.
