The Detroit Lions are approaching an important offseason in 2021, one that will definitely be influenced by the result of the upcoming season. Is it time to replace Matthew Stafford? Will Matt Patricia keep his job as head coach? Who will the ever-important franchise tag be used on?
Detroit has a bunch of candidates for the 2021 tag. For starters, their entire wide receiving corps (just about) will become unrestricted free agents. That includes Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones, Danny Amendola, Geronimo Allison and more. Another player worthy of the tag would be left tackle Taylor Decker.
The choice will probably come down to the direction of the franchise (are they tearing it all down after another miserable season or are they building off a playoff appearance?), but also the difficulty of the contract. That is why I believe Kenny Golladay will get tagged.
The Lions have struck gold with the former third-round pick who's set to only make $799,081 in 2020. His play style draws comparisons to former Detroit legend Calvin Johnson, and he is quickly joining the "elite" NFL wide receiver conversation.
This should be a very large jump in salary for Golladay, which is why I believe the tag will end up coming into play. Unless an extension happens ahead of time, this long-term deal may have some hurdles to overcome.
If someone like Taylor Decker was tagged without an extension for Golladay, an immediate bidding war would begin for the wide-out during the NFL free agency period. Detroit cannot possibly want that to occur. Top NFL franchises have foresight, and the Lions should look to solve a couple of these problems before they come about.
