The Cleveland Guardians had reason to celebrate this weekend. The team punched their tickets to the ALDS with a dramatic 15th-inning walk off homer from Oscar Gonzalez, finishing off a convincing 2-0 series win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Unfortunately, the good news hit a screeching halt on Monday when Cleveland learned of a brutal injury blow to one of their best relievers.

According to Guardians insider Zack Meisel, reliever Nick Sandlin has been diagnosed with an upper back/shoulder strain and will be out for the rest of the season.

Sandlin's importance cannot be overstated. The second-year pro made 46 appearances throughout the year, pitching to a stellar 2.25 ERA and 11 games finished in 44.0 innings of work. He consistently ate up high-leverage innings late in the year, and often worked as a bridge to Emmanuel Clase, a league-leading closer (42 saves).

Cleveland's pitching staff is the biggest strength of their roster. The bullpen ranked fifth in baseball with a 3.05 ERA, while the entire staff also ranked fifth at a 3.46 ERA mark.

The Guardians will have to replace Sandlin on the ALCS roster. Entering this matchup, Cleveland is considered a +182 series underdog against the the New York Yankees (-220), according to MLB odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
