The MLB's Spring Training period is in full swing as Opening Day 2022 is only a few weeks away. As the Cleveland Guardians prepare for their first season under a new name, the club has just received a pair of unfortunate injury updates.

James Karinchak Injury Update

The Guardians announced Saturday that right-handed reliever James Karinchak has been shut down after MRI results revealed that he has suffered a teres major muscle strain. The club plans to re-evaluate him in the next seven to 10 days.

Karinchak made 60 appearances for the Guardians last season, pitching to a 7-4 record. He finished the campaign with a career-worst 4.07 ERA and 1.211 WHIP, which was disappointing after he finished sixth in the 2021 American League Rookie of the Year voting.

If Karinchak looks good when he's re-evaluated, he likely won't see anything more than a brief stint on the injured list.

Luke Maile Injury Update

The Guardians also announced that catcher Luke Maile is dealing with a left hamstring tear and will be forced to miss the next three to four weeks.

Maile spent most of the 2021 baseball season in the minors but still ended up playing 15 games for the Milwaukee Brewers. He went on to record 30 at-bats with the Brewers, tallying four doubles, three RBIs and .300/.382/.433 slash line.

Maile was brought into the be Austin Hedge's backup catcher, so the Guardians will likely have to look elsewhere for a solution. They did sign Sandy Leon to a minor league contract back in November, making it interesting to see if they roll with him or Maile when the latter is healthy.
