Though they aren't mathematically eliminated yet, it's unlikely that the San Francisco Giants will make the 2022 MLB postseason. As general manager Scott Harris considers who to bring back for next season, one player that won't return is veteran reliever Dominic Leone.

Giants insider Alex Pavlovic reports that the club has placed Leone on release waivers on Saturday. The move comes just one day after the veteran relief pitcher landed on the 15-day injury list due to right elbow inflammation.

Leone's release is disappointing due to how reliable he was for the Giants in 2021. Making 57 appearances (four starts), the former Clemson hurler pitched to a 1.51 ERA, 1.099 WHIP and two saves, striking out 50 batters while allowing 22 walks over 53.2 innings pitched.

Fast forward to this year and the Norwich, CT native has been anything but reliable. Leone has a 4.01 ERA in 55 relief appearances in 2022. To make matters worse, he's also given up 18 more hits, 13 more earned runs and two walks more than he did in 2021 despite pitching in 4.1 fewer innings this year.

With only a few weeks remaining on the schedule, it'll be interesting to see if any team is willing to take a flyer on Leone. He clearly has potential when he's on top of his game, but it'll be tough to get to that level as long as he's bothered by elbow inflammation.

Leone was slated to become a free agent at the end of the MLB season anyway, so at least he has the extra time now to focus on where his career takes him next.
