The San Francisco 49ers made a huge splash by inking Trent Williams to the biggest contract for any offensive lineman in NFL history.
That wasn't the only upgrade they made to the line on Wednesday, however.
Alex Mack 49ers
The 49ers are reportedly signing free agent center and former Atlanta Falcon Alex Mack.
Mack is a five-time Pro Bowler (twice with the Cleveland Browns, three times with the Atlanta Falcons), and he spent the 2016 season playing for Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan in Atlanta, where they made the franchise's most recent Super Bowl run.
At 35 years old, Mack's best days are behind him, but he still received a solid 72.1 overall grade from Pro Football Focus in 2019 and held up with a 70.2 run-blocking grade in a down year on a mess of a Falcons team in 2020.
Daniel Brunskill started as Center for the 49ers last season, and he graded out just 24th among 36 qualifying players at the position. Mack ranked 16th, so this looks like a clear upgrade.
The Niners are trying to get back in Super Bowl contention following a disappointing 2020 season, and shoring up the offensive line is certainly a step in the right direction.
