The Seattle Seahawks have officially started their offseason after being eliminated from the NFL Playoffs. The biggest question that needs answering pertains to quarterback with Geno Smith slated to hit free agency following a stellar 2022 campaign.

Now the first update on contract talks between Smith and Seattle has emerged.

Geno Smith Seahawks Rumors

Head coach Pete Carroll said on a radio appearance Monday morning that the Seahawks want to keep Smith around. He revealed that there have been preliminary talks about a contract, though there's nothing concrete as of yet.

This is great news for fans who want Smith back in 2023. The veteran broke out and had a career year this past season, posting career highs in passing yards (4,282) and touchdowns (30). He was simply one of the best QBs in the NFL in 2022, leading the league with a 69.8% completion rate.

Hitting the next level as a player also means that Smith is due for a massive raise as a free agent. Seattle got Smith on a bargain $3.5 million deal this past offseason, but it'll cost significantly more to retain him.

The Seahawks will have to decide how much in terms of dollars and years they want to offer the journeyman in free agency. Both sides seem very open to the idea of running things back, though, so that's a start.
