The U.S. Open is finally here and back to its normal timeframe, and it's set to be a fantastic tournament. With every big name in golf prepared to compete for a title, golf's toughest test is for the taking.
With that in mind, let's take a look at three players to target for your fantasy team this week.
U.S. Open Fantasy
Xander Schauffele has been on a tear of late, finishing in the top 15 in four of his last five starts, which includes a T-3. He has also placed in the top five in two of his last three majors, including last year's U.S. Open, where he finished solo fifth. He has also placed in the top 25 in two of his last three starts at Torrey Pines and even grabbed a second-place finish at the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open here. He ranks No. 36 on tour in Strokes Gained (SG): Off-The-Tee, No. 22 in SG: Approach The Green, No. 18 in SG: Tee-To-Green and No. 3 in SG: Total. Add in his No. 8 ranking in SG: Putting and even on these tougher greens Schauffele should make some noise this week.
Patrick Cantlay is coming off of an impressive win at the Memorial a couple of weeks ago and prior to that, he had a top-25 finish at the PGA Championship. While he doesn't have an impressive resume at Torrey Pines, missing two of his last three cuts there, Cantlay is an intriguing player who could make a run for this tournament given his current form. He ranks No. 15 on tour in SG: Off-The-Tee, which will be huge at this long course. He also ranks No. 18 in Greens in Regulation (GIR). Add in his SG: Around the Green (14th), SG: Tee-To-Green (4th) and SG: Total (4th), it's clear Cantlay has what it takes to play with the best here.
Tony Finau has come so so close so many times at majors over the past few years and just hasn't gotten over the hump. And he's a big hitter off the tee built for La Jolla, which his resume proves. He has finished in the top 6 in four of his last five starts at La Jolla in the Famers Insurance Open. Finau has placed in the top 10 in four of his last five majors and six of his last nine. He seems to run it on when the lights are the brightest, and few lights are brighter in golf than those of the U.S. Open. If Finau can clean up his putting, and keeps doing what he's doing in other facets of his game, where he ranks No. 27 in SG: Off-The Tee, No. 13 in SG: Approach The Green, No. 7 in SG: Around-the Green, No. 6 in SG: Tee-to Green nd No. 13 in SG: Total, then he's one of the most dangerous players out there this week.
