The Atlanta Falcons let Todd Gurley walk this offseason, leaving the team without an obvious starter at running back. The organization wasted little time finding his replacement, inking former Carolina Panthers running back Mike Davis to a two-year, $5.5 million deal in free agency.
Considering how well Davis played in relief of Christian McCaffrey last season, this contract looks like a steal. But some of the underlying numbers show that the deal may be even better than you think.
Since 2019, Davis has forced a missed tackle on a whopping 27% of his touches, tying him with Nick Chubb for the best such mark in the league. He's also one spot ahead of another Pro Bowl-caliber RB in Kareem Hunt (26%) while the extremely efficient Tony Pollard checks in at No. 4 (25%).
That's some pretty lofty company to be in, especially for a guy who's set to make under $3 million per season.
Now that he's with the Falcons, perhaps Davis is looking at a Michael Turner-esque breakout campaign in 2021.
