The Atlanta Falcons have made it abundantly clear they are going to establish the run in 2022. It's surprisingly paid off for this team, helping put them at the top of the NFC South over their first eight games.
Atlanta's success on the ground has actually landed them in the NFL's record books.
The Falcons are the first team in history to have four players with 250-plus rushing yards over the first eight games of the season. Cordarrelle Patterson (340), Tyler Allgeier (324), Marcus Mariota (280) and Caleb Huntley (265) have all crossed that mark as Atlanta embraces the ground game.
The fact four different players have reached this milestone, including three at the same position, speaks to how well the Falcons have optimized their rushing attack. Patterson being knocked out after Week 4 with a knee injury could've been a brutal blow for this team; instead, Allgeier and Huntley have stepped right in to fill his shoes.
Mariota's ability to make plays with his legs was one of the main reasons he was brought in, and he's fulfilling his end of the bargain. He's averaging a solid 35.0 yards per game and found the endzone three times as a runner in 2022.
Patterson's potential return in Week 9 would be a huge boost to a rushing unit that's clicking on all cylinders. This team gets just the matchup to keep it going on Sunday as well, since the Los Angeles Chargers are allowing the sixth-most rushing yards per game (137.6) in the league.
