A Julio Jones trade has long been thought of as a possibility for the Atlanta Falcons. However, it was still surprising when news broke on Monday that Atlanta was listening to trade calls for their star wideout ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft.

Falcons GM Terry Fontenot confirmed some calls have taken place and explained why the team is listening.

Julio Jones Trade Rumors

Fontenot said plainly that the team would listen to trade offers for any player because it's his job to make sure the organization gets better. The GM could've skirted around the issue and gave vague non-comments, especially considering this involves a franchise icon. Fans should appreciate Fontenot's candor even if it does involve the possibility of trading Jones.

Jones has been a star for the Falcons since he was drafted by the team in 2011. He's earned seven Pro Bowl selections and two All-Pro nodds throughout his 10-year career in Atlanta. If traded after June 1, the Falcons could save $15.3 million against this year's cap and push off a $15.5 million dead cap hit charge to next year (while paying $7.75 million this year).

There's no doubt that a divorce from Jones would be hard, even if Fontenot doesn't have the same ties to players as the new GM. It's clear the dire cap situation Fontenot inherited from his predecessor is weighing on him and making him consider drastic moves if need be.
