The Atlanta Falcons will continue to navigate a tricky cap situation this offseason after GM Terry Fontenot made a few moves last year. One of those maneuvers included reducing the salary and length of Dante Fowler's contract, who originally signed a three-year deal in 2020 as a free agent.

With Fowler now slated to hit the market again in 2022 instead of 2023, the Falcons have made their separation from the veteran official.

Dante Fowler Contract

Atlanta announced on Wednesday that it has released Fowler. The move allows the linebacker to get started on looking for a new team instead of waiting for the next league year to officially begin.

Fowler was originally signed to a three-year, $45 million contract by the Falcons to revitalize their pass rush. Instead, he struggled in 14 games during the 2020 season, recording 3.0 sacks and 4.0 tackles for a loss.

He then agreed to a contract adjustment with the chance to earn incentives in 2021, but he fell short of his first benchmark with 4.5 sacks this past year.

The signing ultimately ends as a loss for the Falcons, who will eat a dead cap hit of $4.66 million as a result of their agreement with the sixth-year pro. They'll look to fill their pass-rushing need in the upcoming 2022 NFL Draft, as a slew of top-rated edge rushers are among this year's class.

If Fowler can regain his 2019 form, when he racked up 11.5 sacks during a career campaign, he could provide serious value coming off of two down years.
