The Atlanta Falcons began their offseason with unfortunate news, as defensive coordinator Dean Pees announced his retirement after a long and accomplished career. Now Atlanta is on the search for someone worthy of following the coaching legend following his two-year stint.

It turns out the Falcons could turn to a division rival to fill that need.

Arthur Smith and compnay have request permission to speak with Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Al Holcomb. Joe Person of The Athletic reports the Panthers have granted the request, so they won't block their division rivals from interviewing Holcomb.

The 52-year-old has spent eight of the last 10 seasons in Carolina, serving as linebackers coach from 2013-2017 before returning in 2020. He was promoted to defensive coordinator prior to this year, overseeing a Panthers unit that ranked No. 22 in yards allowed and No. 19 in points.

It makes sense for the Falcons to at least bring Halcomb in after playing against him twice a season for several years. He could have a valuable perspective as someone who's faced Atlanta with major regularity over the past decade. Perhaps he has ideas on how this unit could get better after recent struggles.
