The Atlanta Falcons entered training camp with two new faces at the quarterback position. Marcus Mariota was signed in free agency and Desmond Ridder was a third-round draft pick back in April. All signs point to the veteran being the starting QB moving forward after the first practice, though.

Atlanta Falcons News

Josh Kendall of The Athletic reported that Mariota took the entirety of the first-team reps at QB on Wednesday. The 28-year-old's familiarity with head coach Arthur Smith's system has certainly been giving him a leg up on Ridder. The two spent a lot of time working together on the Tennessee Titans.

“Obviously, we’ve got a plan for each of them. Marcus is the starter. That’s how we’re going into this thing.”

This'll be Mariota's second chance at leading an NFL team and his first opportunity to start since 2019. That was when he was benched in favor of Ryan Tannehill in Tennessee. Overall, Mariota has posted a 29-32 record in his career to go along with a 77:45 touchdown to interception ratio.

Mariota described this season as "a great opportunity for me to prove myself" and mentioned how "confident" he was in Smith's offensive scheme. That has to be music to Falcons fans ears. After all, this will be the first time since 2007 that Matt Ryan is not standing behind the center in Week 1.

The Falcons will hope Mariota's underrated speed and playmaking abilities can help them secure a playoff berth. Oddsmakers don't find that outcome likely, though. Atlanta checks in at +790 to reach the postseason and has odds set at +25000 to win Super Bowl 57, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
