The New York Mets capped off their late-season collapse in heartbreaking fashion. The team managed just 1 hit against Joe Musgrove and the San Diego Padres in a decisive Game 3 of the NL Wild Card series.

While the loss certainly still stings, baseball fans understand this is a sport that's won and lost 365 days a year. That means moving on from such a devastating finish quickly and making wise decisions to help build a World Series worthy roster in 2023.

One of those important pieces is closer Edwin Diaz, the most dominant late-inning arm in the game this past year. He's headed for unrestricted free agency, but spoke about his potential Mets future after Sunday's loss.

Edwin Diaz Free Agency

This should be music to the ears of Mets' fans, but Diaz indicated interest in re-signing with his current team. "I hope [the Mets] come to me quick to talk."

MLB's free agency negotiations are technically on hold until a couple of days after the final out of the World Series. But, that doesn't stop teams from working on deals with their own free agents. This gives Diaz and the Mets approximately a month of exclusive negotiations before he hits the open market.

The Mets need to pounce on this opportunity. Signed to a short one-year deal, Diaz enjoyed the best season of his 7-year career by posting an insane 1.31 ERA, 0.839 WHIP en route to 32 saves and 49 games finished. Steve Cohen and his ownership group need to make a responsible offer, but Diaz will be getting paid lavishly this offseason and the Mets don't want to see him wearing a different uniform next year.
