Philadelphia Eagles fans were fearing the worst when defensive end Derek Barnett went down clutching his knee in a Week 1 win over the Detroit Lions. That fear became a reality on Monday as it was revealed he suffered a torn ACL and will now be sidelined for the rest of the 2023 NFL season.

Derek Barnett Injury Update

Losing a reliable defensive end is not something that is easy to deal with, especially for an Eagles team that rotates players at the position often. Barnett had appeared in 12 defensive snaps and two special teams snaps before going down on Sunday. He did not record a tackle during the contest.

Barnett returned to the Eagles on a two-year deal worth up to $14 million in free agency this past offseason. The 26-year-old has played with the team for five years, racking up 147 tackles (36.0 for loss), 21.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in 65 career games (45 starts).

"I am a huge Derek Barnett fan and he’ll be missed, so that sucks. I hate that for him, I hate that for this team. I can’t tell you how much I think of Derek."

Brandon Graham and Josh Sweat remain the starting defensive ends in Philly's 4-3 scheme, but the team is left with only one other healthy DE on the roster. That would be Tarron Jackson, the second-year pro out of Coastal Carolina. The assumption is that he will see increased snaps moving forward.

After recording only 29 sacks as a team in 2021 (No. 31 in NFL), the Eagles may be forced to make a move at the position. It could be as simple as calling up Matt Leo from the practice squad. For now, Philadelphia has odds set at +1300 to win Super Bowl 57, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
