The Houston Astros have a chance to prove their worth later this week when they play a one-off game against the New York Yankees on Thursday. Fans were excited for a potential matchup between aces Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole, however, that's no longer the case.

Rotational changes made by Astros manager Dusty Baker have robbed fans of the pitching duel. Houston insider Chalnder Rome is reporting that Verlander will instead pitch against the New York Mets on Wednesday, whereas Luis Garcia gets the nod against the Yankees.

Houston Astros Roster News

NBC Sports EDGE is speculating that one reason for the change is that Baker didn't want either Verlander or Framber Valdez facing the Yankees in back-to-back starts.

Verlander gave up a run on four hits with three strikeouts over seven innings in a 3-1 victory against the Bronx Bombers on Friday. Meanwhile, Valdez surrendered three runs, two hits and three walks just the day before and did not get the decision for his appearance. The four-game series ended in a 2-2 split.

Even if the Astros' logic makes sense, that doesn't change that fans have been more than open about their disappointment when it comes to not seeing a Verlander vs. Cole matchup. You only need to check the comments on Rome's above tweet to get a general idea.

You can't blame the fans since both aces have been having Cy Young-worthy campaigns. Verlander leads all MLB pitchers with nine wins in 14 starts, pitching to a 2.22 ERA and 0.873 WHIP. On the other hand, Cole is 6-2 in 15 starts with a 2.99 ERA and 1.008 WHIP.

In the meantime, fans will likely have to wait until the postseason for a potential Verlander-Cole collision.
