The Miami Dolphins have been one of the more active teams leading up to the 2021 NFL Draft. Originally, they had the No. 3 pick from the Houston Texans, but traded that to the San Francisco 49ers to move back to No. 12. The Dolphins then traded that pick away to the Eagles to move up to No. 6.
The interesting thing about the Dolphins and the No. 6 pick is that they don’t necessarily need anyone projected to go that high. They already have a quarterback of the future in Tua Tagovailoa, so they don’t need to draft another. So really, they could just end up taking the best player available.
Keeping that in mind, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport has reported that the Dolphins have been taking calls on the sixth overall pick over the last month. If the Atlanta Falcons draft a non-quarterback like Florida TE Kyle Pitts at No. 4 and one of the top quarterback options fall to No. 6, the Dolphins could trade that pick to a team desperate for a future signal-caller.
It’s generally expected that Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson will likely be the first two quarterbacks off of the board. Nevertheless, other QB options like Mac Jones, Justin Fields and Trey Lance all have the potential of being selected soon after the first two picks.
Regardless, the Dolphins are in a good place with the No. 6 pick. On one hand, a quarterback-hungry team like the New England Patriots or Denver Broncos could offer them an astronomical package to move up and get the quarterback they want. On the other hand, if none of these deals impresses the Dolphins, they’ll still be able to select the best player available in a talented draft class.
At the end of the day, Dolphins fans should be happy to be in this scenario. Unless the team makes a lackluster trade, they’re in a win-win situation.
