Dolphins Missed Out on Key Free Agent Signing

The Miami Dolphins spent much of their offseason focused on improving their depth at running back. Their decision not to draft a RB until the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft was surprising. But, they've added multiple backs this offseason in order to bolster the depth chart behind Myles Gaskin.
The run game is definitely a priority in Miami as this team ranked with the 11th-worst rushing attack in 2020, gaining only 105.5 yards per game on the ground. While some of the reinforcements, including the recent signing of Malcolm Brown, are promising, this team missed out on a great free-agent option.
A leftover note: if RB Kerryon Johnson had not been claimed by the Eagles, he would have become a Dolphin. Miami was the other team to put in a claim on him off of waivers.

Miami has built some backfield depth and almost added more.
According to Field Yates of ESPN, the Dolphins had put in a waiver claim for former Detroit Lions running back Kerryon Johnson. Unfortunately, Miami wasn't the only team to place this waivers claim. The Philadelphia Eagles did so as well, and ended up signing the three-year back last week.
It's definitely a missed opportunity for a team looking to take another step forward. The Dolphins missed the playoffs in 2020 but still won 10 games. Ultimately, this team is fired up heading into the 2021 campaign with a new offense centered around quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
On offense, this team may check every box other than running back. Miami is ready for the future of Tagovailoa at quarterback. They also have a group of talented receivers including DeVante Parker, Will Fuller and first-round draft pick Jaylen Waddle. But, the Dolphins will have to continue searching for additional depth at running back after missing out on Johnson.
Johnson averages 4.3 yards per attempt on the ground and offers a receiving threat as well, racking up 500+ receiving yards during his three years in Detroit.
As it stands, FanDuel Sportsbook gives the Dolphins +1400 odds to win the AFC, according to the latest NFL odds.
