Devon Achane Scouting Report
Achane made a name for himself as soon as he step foot on campus in College Station, logging 461 total yards and 5 touchdowns as a freshman. He capped that season off by being named Orange Bowl Most Outstanding Player as he tallied 140 yards and 2 touchdowns in an Aggies victory.
The Texas native then averaged an FBS-best 7.0 yards per carry in 2021 as he posted 1,171 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns. Achane finished his college career with an impressive 2022 campaign, racking up 1,298 yards from scrimmage to go along with 11 scores on 232 touches.
Highlighted strengths of Achane's game focus on his game-changing speed. The former track star uses his elite acceleration and ridiculous top-end speed to make it difficult for defenders to find a pursuit angle. Achane has also been praised for his crisp route-running skills out of the backfield.
Achane is far from a perfect prospect, though, as he doesn't have the size to be relied on in short-yardage plays or be counted on in pass protection. He is best suited as a complementary back, but he is a complementary back capable of finding the end zone on any given play at any given time.
Devon Achane NFL Draft Prediction
As mentioned above, Achane is not going to be an NFL running back that garners 20 or more carries in a game. However, he has the receiving experience as well as the kick return experience to make an impact right away at the NFL level. He is a great No. 2 or No. 3 back to target for an RB-needy squad.
One RB-needy team that sticks out as a potential landing spot is the Tennessee Titans. Derrick Henry is a bruising back and could use a shifty counterpart to help break down the defense. The current depth chart lacks dependable backup RBs, too, with Hassan Haskins and Julius Chestnut.
Tennessee simply needs playmakers and Achane is not only one of the most explosive running backs in this class, but also one of the most explosive players overall. He can come in and give the Titans a much-needed spark for what is projected to be the cost of a third-round pick for the front office.
Prediction: Tennessee Titans (Round 3, 72nd overall)
