All eyes are on Deshaun Watson this week as he's set to make his Cleveland Browns debut on the road against his former team, the Houston Texans. With Watson and the Texans parting ways on less-than-amicable terms, many are wondering about the reception he'll receive when he steps foot onto the field.
As for Watson, he's feeling indifferent about the situation, according to NFL insider Adam Schefter. When asked about whether or not Texans fans will boo or cheer him, the 27-year-old said that he's "not sure" about what reaction he'll get, but that his "main focus is on the gameplan" and trying to win.
Deshaun Watson News
Watson became a Houston fan favorite shortly after he was selected 12th overall at the 2017 NFL Draft. Taking over as the full-time starter in 2018, the former Clemson product led the Texans to two of their six all-time playoff appearances and earning three straight Pro Bowl selections.
Unfortunately, things went downhill quickly after that. Team management changes led to Watson requesting a trade from Houston ahead of the 2021 campaign. Soon after that, sexual harassment allegations came out, causing him to miss the entire season while investigations were ongoing.
Watson's relationship with the Texans was beyond repair, eventually leading to the trade with the Browns. Nevertheless, the veteran QB has yet to play for Cleveland after being suspended 11 games by the NFL for violating the league's personal conduct policy.
Houston may only have one win so far this year, but you can bet they'll play with extra motivation against Watson. At the same time, he has to prove to the Browns that he's worth every penny of his $230 million contract. If he doesn't play like he did in the past, it's safe to say that Cleveland's tumultuous campaign could be over.
At the end of the day, it's clear that the upcoming Browns vs Texans showdown is more than your average NFL game. Only time will tell which side will gain the victory to validate their decision when it comes to the Watson saga.
