The Las Vegas Raiders made waves Wednesday when it was revealed that they're benching starter Derek Carr for backup Jarrett Stidham. Though Carr has played poorly as of late, many are wondering what the real motivation behind the move is.

Well, it turns out a potential trade is at least one reason that explains the decision.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler notes the benching is intended to "preserve" Carr's health heading into the offseason. Fowler adds his trade market could "heat up" following the Super Bowl, so Las Vegas doesn't want to risk that door being closed due to an injury.

A trade being a legit possibility certainly makes sense as a motivator to make this move. Throw in the fact that Carr's contract features certain injury-related guarantees, and the Raiders have two clear reasons to sideline him for the two final games of the year.

Assuming he doesn't play another snap in 2022, Carr will finish the season with his fewest passing yards since 2017 and just one more touchdown pass than last campaign despite being reunited with Davante Adams. He's also currently tied for the league lead with 14 interceptions thrown and has posted the second-worst completion percentage (60.8%) of his career this year.

There should be several suitors for Carr this offseason as QB-needy teams around the league hope to upgrade at the position. It remains to be seen if the signal-caller ever takes the field again for the Raiders, who may opt to go in a different position at quarterback under new head coach Josh McDaniels.
