For the San Francisco 49ers' revenge tour following their 2019-20 Super Bowl defeat, it's been one major loss after the next. The first major injury was to wide receiver Deebo Samuel though, who suffered a stress fracture in his foot over the offseason.
The road back has certainly had its highs and lows for Samuel, who initially almost recovered by Week 1 before suffering a setback. Now the Niners playmaker could return as early as next week, but some insiders believe that a Week 5 2020 debut is more likely.
Deebo Samuel Fantasy Outlook
Until he comes off injured reserve (IR), something that should happen after this weekend, nothing changes for fantasy managers. Most managers probably have Samuel stashed right now, and that will continue until he becomes available.
Once he does come off IR, it's important to remember that you may have to switch him from IR to bench on your roster (assuming you are in a league with IR capabilities). You cannot make any other moves until you do this, so the process can be a hinderance if it happens at the wrong time.
This will become especially annoying if Samuel doesn't even play in Week 4, after receiving a questionable or doubtful tag throughout the week. According to Rapoport, this is "likely."
During his rookie campaign, Samuel was a PPR nightmare for opponents with 57 receptions on 81 targets. Going even deeper into his stats, Deebo earned a heavy touch count both on the run and as a sort of specialist for San Francisco. He came up just short of 1,000 scrimmage yards (961) and there is no question that he is a key cog in this offense when healthy.
