One of the biggest stories this offseason is top wide receivers across the league commanding huge new contracts. This development now shapes the market for rising wideouts who are at the end of their rookie deals, like Deebo Samuel.
After some initial talks with the San Francisco 49ers, Samuel is taking a dramatic step to ensure he gets paid.
Deebo Samuel Contract
Samuel is planning to sit out his team's on-field offseason workouts as he eyes a new deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. He's not alone, as fellow wideouts and 2019 draft class members A.J. Brown and Terry McLaurin are doing the same in reponse to the red-hot WR market.
Holdouts are nothing new for stars wanting better contracts, and it's no surprise Samuel wants to avoid any major injuries as he negotiates with San Francisco's brass. Though there's plenty of time to hash out a deal, this decision puts pressure on the team.
Samuel is certainly due to cash in after a standout 2021 campaign where he earned a First Team All-Pro selection. The South Carolina product starred in a dual-threat role, totaling 1,770 yards from scrimmage and 14 total TDs while operating as a WR/RB combo.
The Niners have made it known they want to extend Samuel, but the exploding market could change things. Hopefully the 49ers can retain the star playmaker who's about to enter just his fourth NFL season.
