Chicago Bears' rookie running back David Montgomery has received a ton of praise from both coaches and analysts this preseason, with many excited for what he will bring on the field. Montgomery is also projected to be a strong producer for fantasy football this season.
Heading into the 2019 NFL season, the Bears have 261 unaccounted for carries from last season. Chicago shipped their early down back, Jordan Howard, to Philly. Montgomery was primarily drafted to fill Howard's role. However, it's the receiving ability of the rookie that coaches are reportedly "in love" with.
The expectation in Chicago is that Montgomery will lead the backfield in rushes by a large margin, while also taking a couple passing targets away from Tarik Cohen, who the coaching staff wants to keep in a supportive, change-of-pace role. With the way the preseason is trending, Mike Davis is not expected to be a threat to Montgomery at all, but will be used as a reliever for the rookie.
The rookie's draft stock has been trending upwards and is now bring drafted as RB22 (42 overall). With the RB2 tier being so deep this season, this is probably about right for Montgomery, but there is no doubt that his ceiling is much higher and should be valued as such for dynasty formats.
