The 2018 season, in which David Johnson put up 1,386 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns, seems like forever ago as the veteran running back struggled to perform in 2020. His fantasy outlook in 2021 is quickly deteriorating as he is expected to take on a reduced role with the Houston Texans.

David Johnson Fantasy Value

Johnson started 12 games for Houston last season, racking up 691 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns on the ground. He also hauled in 33 of his 46 targets for 314 yards and 2 more scores. The veteran back finished as the No. 21 RB in PPR leagues, but now finds himself playing in a crowded backfield.

The Texans made some moves at running back this offseason bringing in veteran Mark Ingram as well as fourth-year player Philip Lindsay. That doesn't happen if the team fully believes Johnson is capable of being a workhorse on offense. Simply put, this has running back by committee written all over it.

Houston is not projected to be a very good team and could opt to see what Lindsay has to offer since he is a few years younger than his counterpart in Johnson. The former Denver Bronco averages 4.8 yards per attempt in his career and has scored 17 touchdowns over 42 games played (32 starts).

Reports claim Johnson may only be viewed as the third-down back on this team and it's possible he doesn't see much work in the passing game at all. That would greatly reduce his value in fantasy football. He is a fade candidate heading into drafts this fall given his eighth-round price tag.

Fantasy managers should not be chomping at the bit to get any type of shares in an underwhelming Houston offense. They would be smart to avoid Johnson as he doesn't have nearly the same upside as some of the RBs drafted around him including Zack Moss and Damien Harris.

David Johnson ADP

Johnson checks in at RB33 in The Duel's 2021 fantasy football rankings. He owns an ADP of 97.0 and RB35, according to FantasyPros.
