Spending a mid-round raft pick to secure a starting quarterback is a popular strategy amongst fantasy football managers. However, it can be a tough decision to make once the top options are gone. Managers may be forced to choose between two young playmakers in Dak Prescott and Justin Herbert.

Choosing between these two quarterbacks isn't going to be simple, but let's break it down.

Dak Prescott Fantasy Outlook

Dak Prescott is one of the most controversial quarterbacks in fantasy football this year. Some managers seem to be scared away from the injury issues he has had in the past. Others are drawn to him simply because of the upside he comes with. Prescott threw for an impressive 1,856 yards and 9 touchdowns in just 5 games played last season.

The Dallas Cowboys' leader is expected to be ready to go for the season opener on September 12. Assuming that is the case, Prescott has a shot to get back to being a true QB1. His arsenal of wide receivers led by Amari Cooper ranks as one of the best units in the NFL.

Of course, drafting Prescott involves a lot of risk. That risk may be worth it given he can be a top-3 QB when fully healthy, but is currently being drafted outside of the top five at the position.

Justin Herbert Fantasy Outlook

Another young playmaker that has a lot of upside this upcoming season is Los Angeles Chargers' quarterback Justin Herbert. The second-year player out of Oregon lit up his rookie season by throwing for 4,336 yards and 31 touchdowns in 15 games played.

The one major benefit that comes with drafting Herbert is his consistency. The 23-year-old posted at least 300 yards and 1 touchdown in eight games in 2020. He has proven that he is capable of being a reliable QB1 in fantasy football and gets his best weapon in Keenan Allen back for another go-around.

If there is a downside to drafting Herbert, it is the potential of a sophomore slump. Defenses have had an entire offseason to watch tape and figure out how to slow down Herbert in the backfield. His ceiling remains sky high given the room he has to grow in the NFL, though.

Dak Prescott or Justin Herbert

This decision is about as razor close as it can be. It simply comes down to upside and Prescott could be in for a big season. His motivation to return to the field and show everyone why he is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL makes him the better option here.

Prescott checks in at QB6 in The Duel's 2021 fantasy football rankings, while Herbert can be found one spot lower at QB7.
