The Chicago Cubs' biggest splash of the offseason was signing star shortstop Dansby Swanson to man half of their middle infield for the next seven seasons. Chicago isn't done yet, though.

Eric Hosmer Cubs News

MLB insider Jon Heyman is reporting that the Cubs are closing in on a deal with former All-Star first baseman Eric Hosmer.

Hosmer made the All-Star team in 2016, with the Kansas City Royals, but then put up a career year in 2017 and signed a huge deal with the San Diego Padres that following offseason.

His time in San Diego never quite lived up to the hype, though. He was traded to the Boston Red Sox at the 2022 trade deadline and the Red Sox declined to bring him back.

Hosmer, despite his underwhelming play at times, would still be an upgrade at first base for the Cubs, who are currently looking at a depth chart of rookie Matt Mervis, Patrick Wisdom and Cody Bellinger at the position.

The deal isn't done yet, but it's safe to assume Hosmer could be signed at a reasonable price after some down years. That would provide a younger Cubs team with another valuable veteran locker room presence with some playoff experience.
