The Chicago Cubs underwent a scary moment on Thursday night when longtime catcher Willson Contreras was hit in the ankle with a pitch. Contreras was immediately replaced in the game, leaving some questions about the severity of this potential injury.

Fortunately, it seems the Cubs have avoided bad news with the outcome. David Ross spoke to reporters following Thursday's win over the St. Louis Cardinals, reporting that the x-rays for his catcher came back negative.

The pitch appeared to hit Contreras slightly above his ankle, but had the pitch been just a few inches lower this outcome could have turned out much different.

The Cubs return to action against the Cardinals on Friday afternoon and Contreras will receive a day of rest. P.J. Higgins will start behind the plate and bat seventh in his absence.

Look for Contreras to possibly return on Saturday as he looks to extend an eight-game hit streak. The two-time All-Star is hitting .367 including four home runs and seven RBIs in that span. Chicago enters Friday afternoon's affair as -116 moneyline favorites, according to MLB odds on FanDuel Sportsbook.
