It was a freak collision with an umpire that led to young Chicago Cubs shortstop Nico Hoerner landing on the 10-day injured list. Fortunately, after a two week absence, the Cubs finally got some good news around their young playmaker.

The Cubs announced on Wednesday that Hoerner will officially be activated off the injured list.

This news of Hoerner's activation comes just two days after manager David Ross detailed the franchise's plan to "take things slow" with their fourth-year infielder.

Hoerner's return results in a crowded Cubs infield, however.

Veteran Andrelton Simmons made his 2022 debut just days after Hoerner went down. The 11-year Simmons began the season on the IL with a shoulder ailment.

Top Cubs prospect Christopher Morel also made his MLB debut during this absence, and has already claimed his stake for more playing time thanks to a ferocious start at the plate in just seven games.

Regardless, Hoerner is back and a welcome addition to Chicago's lineup. The 25-year-old slashed .271/.293/.396 through his first 29 games, including 11 RBIs and a pair of stolen bases.

Chicago needs all the help they can get. The Cubs sit in third place in the NL Central with an 18-24 overall record. FanDuel Sportsbook's MLB odds show the Cubs at just +5500 to win the division.
