Cubs Get Bad News With Latest Wade Miley Injury Update

The Chicago Cubs addressed a lack of pitching depth by claiming starter Wade Miley on waivers this offseason. The veteran was expected to be locked into a rotation spot, but is not off to a great start in 2022. Miley has been shut down for the time being after an MRI showed inflammation in his left elbow.

This update came out of nowhere and is obviously serious given the extent of the injury cannot be determined quite yet. The good news is that structural damage has been ruled out. Miley has been working his way back from a neck ailment as well and will now be shut down for at least 10 days.

A return to throwing in mid-April is the best case scenario in Chicago. Seeing what Miley is able to do on the mound at that point will give the Cubs an idea of when he can be activated. The 11-year pro finished with a 12-7 record and 3.37 ERA across 28 starts for the Cincinnati Reds last season.

Miley's absence will likely open up a spot for Justin Steele to see extended innings. The 26-year-old appeared in 20 games for the Cubs in 2021 (9 starts) and posted a 4.26 ERA alongside a 1.351 WHIP. Steele struck out a total of 59 batters in 57.0 innings pitched and will aim to keep improving.

For now, the Cubs have their attention turned toward an opening series against the Milwaukee Brewers starting on Thursday, April 7. Manager David Ross' squad has odds set at +1100 to win the NL Central division and odd set at +13000 to win the World Series, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
